Common Embalming Machine Problems: Warning Signs and When to Stop Using the Machine

Embalming machines usually do not need to stop working completely before there is a problem worth paying attention to.

Changes in pressure, flow, sound, electrical operation, pulsation, leaking, vibration, or general performance can all provide useful information before a machine reaches complete failure.

The important first step is not guessing which part has failed. It is accurately identifying what changed from normal operation.

Low Pressure, Weak Flow or No Flow

Pressure and flow are two of the most commonly confused embalming-machine complaints.

A funeral-home employee may describe a machine as having “no pressure” because very little fluid is coming from the hose, even though the pressure gauge is responding normally. Another machine may genuinely be unable to build pressure, which then causes the fluid output to become weak as well.

The pressure gauge helps separate the two.

If the machine develops a meaningful or normal pressure reading but produces little or no usable fluid, that points toward a flow problem.

If the pressure control is increased but the gauge remains extremely low compared with that machine's normal operation—and the fluid output is also weak—that points more strongly toward a pressure-building problem.

The Machine Will Not Turn On

A machine that is completely dead is a different complaint from one that powers on but does not pump normally.

Before assuming that the motor or another internal component has failed, verify the basic external power conditions that are appropriate for normal operator inspection.

If the machine has power available but remains dead, or if it hums, buzzes, starts and stops, or behaves intermittently, those observations are important.

If there is a burnt electrical smell, visible smoke, sparking, or another obvious electrical problem, stop using the machine rather than repeatedly turning it on and off to see whether the condition clears.

The Machine Starts but Shuts Off

A machine that starts and then stops can be different from one that never turns on at all.

Pay attention to when the shutdown occurs.

Does it stop immediately? Does it run for several minutes first? Does the shutdown occur when pressure is increased? Does it restart after sitting for a period of time?

Those details can be much more useful than simply reporting that the machine “keeps shutting off.”

Repeatedly restarting equipment that continues to shut itself down is generally not a good way to work around the problem.

Loss of Pulsation or Another Operating Mode

Some embalming machines provide pulsation or other operating modes in addition to normal injection.

If one operating function stops working while another continues normally, report the difference.

For example, a machine that still produces pressure and flow but no longer operates correctly in a pulsation mode is showing a different complaint from a machine that has lost all pressure and flow.

The exact machine matters because Porti-Boy, Duotronic, Dodge, and Frigid machines use different designs and controls.

New Leaks or Fluid Where It Should Not Be

A leak does not have to be pouring fluid onto the floor before it deserves attention.

Watch for new moisture, recurring residue, fluid accumulating where it normally does not, or evidence that a connection or internal area is beginning to leak.

Small leaks are worth addressing early because fluid can eventually affect surrounding components and create a larger repair than the original leak itself.

A leak near electrical components should be taken particularly seriously.

New Sounds

People who use the same embalming machine regularly usually know what it normally sounds like.

A new hum, buzz, grind, chatter, squeal, rattle, or other unusual mechanical sound is useful information.

Try to identify when the sound occurs: when the machine first starts, while pressure is increasing, during fluid delivery, during a particular operating mode, or continuously whenever the machine is running.

A new sound does not automatically identify the failed component, but it can provide valuable information when diagnosing the machine.

Vibration or a Change in How the Machine Feels

A machine that suddenly begins vibrating noticeably more than normal should not be ignored simply because it continues producing pressure and flow.

Mechanical wear, mounting issues, pump or motor conditions, or other internal problems can change how the machine feels during operation.

The important point for the operator is recognizing that the machine has changed from its normal behavior and reporting when the change occurs.

Electrical Warning Signs

If an embalming machine develops a burnt electrical smell, visible smoke, sparking, or another obvious electrical problem, stop using the machine.

Do not repeatedly turn the machine on and off to see whether the condition clears itself.

That type of symptom should be treated differently from a normal pressure or flow complaint.

The Machine Is Gradually Getting Weaker

Not every failure happens suddenly.

One of the most useful warning signs can simply be that the machine no longer performs the way it used to.

Personnel may notice that they are turning the pressure control farther than before, getting less fluid delivery, waiting longer for the same result, hearing the motor behave differently, or seeing performance slowly decrease over time.

Those gradual changes are worth reporting before the machine finally stops working.

Early service can sometimes prevent a developing condition from causing damage to additional components.

Recent Repairs Matter

If a problem begins immediately after the machine has been repaired, cleaned, moved, or had a component replaced, mention that when requesting help.

The timing does not automatically mean the recent work caused the problem, but it can be extremely useful information.

The same applies if a machine was operating normally before being transported or moved and begins behaving differently afterward.

Different Embalming Machines Behave Differently

Do not assume that a pressure number, control response, operating mode, or troubleshooting observation from one embalming machine applies to another.

Porti-Boy, Duotronic, Dodge, and Frigid machines are separate machines with different designs, controls, pressure ranges, flow capabilities, and service requirements.

Whenever possible, provide the manufacturer and exact model when asking for troubleshooting help or service.

What Should You Record Before Calling for Service?

You do not need to diagnose the machine yourself.

It is far more useful to describe exactly what it is doing.

Record the pressure-gauge behavior, actual fluid output, when the problem occurs, whether the condition is constant or intermittent, any unusual sounds or vibration, leaks, electrical symptoms, recent repairs, and the manufacturer/model.

A short video showing the gauge and machine operation can also be very useful when it can be recorded safely.

When Should an Embalming Machine Be Taken Out of Service?

Stop relying on the machine when its operation becomes unsafe or unpredictable.

That includes significant leaking, a burnt electrical smell, smoke or sparking, repeated unexplained shutdowns, severe abnormal mechanical noise or vibration, or pressure and flow behavior that can no longer be controlled or relied upon.

The fact that a machine will still turn on does not necessarily mean it should continue being used.

Preventive Maintenance Helps Catch Changes Earlier

Preventive maintenance is most useful before the equipment reaches complete failure.

A comprehensive service should consider the machine's electrical condition, visible wiring and connections, hoses and fluid lines, pump and motor operation, valves and controls, gauges, pressure and flow performance, leaks, and the machine's overall operation.

The goal is to identify developing wear or deterioration while the equipment can still be serviced rather than waiting until it becomes unusable.
